Healing PTSD with Holistic Medicine & Acupuncture in Kitsap and Bremerton

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the experience of adverse & severe mental, emotional and physical ailments following a traumatic event. It leaves a significant imprint, which is stored in the nervous system. This leads to the recurring symptoms often associated with PTSD, such as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, fear and worry. Trauma may be physical, sexual, verbal or emotional in origin.

In my practice, I have had excellent results treating trauma and PTSD with acupuncture, herbal medicine, mind body awareness and transformational breathwork. In this article, I will discuss the benefit of holistic medicine in treating PTSD.

Trauma will often alter the way in which we perceive the world and relate to ourselves or others. Trauma may also negatively affect other bodily processes, such as digestion and sleep. PTSD affects 24 million Americans, including 50% of all mental health outpatients.

Women are 2x as likely to suffer with PTSD.

Often the first and most important step of healing is believing that we are a capable and worthy of feeling better and healing. Giving ourselves permission to heal is very important.

In my practice, I have found that the key to healing PTSD and recovering from trauma is about healing and balancing the nervous system. The nervous system has two parts, sympathetic, which activates our fight or flight response and parasympathetic, which promotes rest and relaxation.

When chronically stressed, cortisol levels go way up, which leads to the sympathetic N.S. firing off, we are turned on high alert and in a constant fight or flight state. The parasympathetic is unable to kick in for rest and relaxation.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine helps to calm the anxiety and stress, being generated by the sympathetic nervous system. The therapies then activate the parasympathetic N.S. function of rest and relax, promoting healthy hormone release. This allows the body to heal and release the stored trauma.

Mind Body Awareness and Transformational Breathwork helps us to get in touch with ourselves and then with consciousness using our breath to release the stored trauma. This is incredibly powerful for the total healing process of the individual.
